About the Department of Animal Science

The Department of Animal Science was established in 1961 and has since evolved to become one of the five fully fledged units under the School of Agriculture. The Department ensures an enabling environment for its research, training and outreach work in order to attract, recruit and maintain highly qualified animal scientists. The Department envisions creating a centre of excellence that trains livestock scientists and animal agriculture and husbandry development managers. These professionals will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Animal Production Sector in the Ghanaian economy and acquire the skills necessary to enhance animal productivity. Additionally, the Department aims to strengthen the private sector's capacity to meet the growing market demand for quality meat and other products. It will also focus on conducting mission-oriented and demand-driven research for knowledge acquisition while maintaining dynamic outreach programs to support the development of Ghana’s agriculture. The long-term mission is to develop systems which maximize efficiency in an environmentally beneficial, ethically defensible, socially acceptable and relevant to the vision of the Department.

In terms of teaching, the Department of Animal Science provides the Animal Science component of the BSc. Agriculture Programme of the School of Agriculture. The Department also runs postgraduate courses leading to the award of MAgric/MPhil/PhD in Animal Science with specialization in one of the following areas: Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Animal Physiology, Meat Science and Technology, Microbiology and Immunology and Range and Forage Management. This is possible because of our state-of-the-art Molecular Genetics Laboratory, the Cameron Meat Science and Technology Laboratory, the Immunology and Microbiology Laboratory and the Animal Nutrition Laboratory. The Department also benefits from facilities and expertise at the Livestock and Poultry Research Centre (LIPREC) of the University of Ghana.
