The Department of Sociology was established in 1950 and has grown steadily over the years to become the largest department in the School of the Social Sciences. It has trained and continues to train hundreds of young men and women for various sectors of Ghanaian and global life. The Department services other departments in the University such as the departments of Nursing, Social Work, Family and Consumer Studies, and the Faculty of Engineering. Others are the Centre for Social Policy Studies, Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy, University of Ghana Medical School, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), Ghana Police College. But the influence of the Department extends beyond the academy to government institutions such as Ghana Prisons, as well as to some local and international civil society groups.
