UG Celebrates International Exchange Alumna Christina Koch on Historic Artemis II Mission

The University of Ghana has joined the global community in celebrating its former international exchange student, Ms. Christina Koch (née Hammock), who journeyed as a member of the crew for Artemis II, a landmark mission in humanity’s return to deep space exploration.

Ms. Koch was the only female astronaut among the four-member crew that successfully orbited the Moon, marking the first crewed lunar mission in over five decades since the Apollo program.

Her association with the University dates back to the 1999/2000 academic year, when she studied at Legon under an exchange programme. During her stay, she pursued courses in History of Ghana, History of Africa, Twi for Beginners, Music and Rural Sociology, an experience that contributed to her global perspective and intellectual growth.

Reflecting on her time in Ghana, Ms. Koch shared in a 2019 post on X that her experience at the University of Ghana was “positive, life-changing and perspective-deepening,” drawing a parallel between her study-abroad journey and spaceflight. She noted that seeing the beauty of Ghana from space reminded her of the people she encountered and the enduring impact of exploring new environments.

The Artemis II mission formed part of NASA’s broader efforts to return humans to the Moon and lay the groundwork for future exploration, including long-term lunar presence and eventual missions to Mars. The mission successfully tested critical systems required for sustained human spaceflight beyond the orbit of the Earth.

The University takes pride in Ms. Koch’s achievements, which reflect its commitment to providing a transformative educational experience to students from diverse backgrounds. Her journey continues to inspire a new generation of students, particularly young women, to pursue careers in science, technology and innovation.

The University looks forward to welcoming Ms. Koch back to Legon following the successful completion of the mission, to celebrate this remarkable demonstration of bravery and excellence.

The University extends its warmest wishes to Ms. Koch and her fellow crew members on the successful completion of this historic mission, confident that their accomplishment will inspire generations across Ghana, Africa and the world.
