GTDC, University of Ghana Open Campus Tourism Desk to Boost Heritage Experience

As part of Ghana Month celebrations, the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), in partnership with the University of Ghana, has opened a Campus Tourism Desk to position the University as a key heritage destination.

The initiative will facilitate curated tours to attractions including the African Studies Museum, the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies Museum, the School of Performing Arts, the iconic Great Hall tower with panoramic views of Accra and other scenic places across campus.

Delivering opening remarks at a short ceremony to inaugurate the office, Chief Executive Officer of GTDC, Prof. Kobby Mensah, indicated that the University’s heritage, unique layout and prime location make it possible to package and market a five-hour tour experience to both domestic and international tourists.

He noted that the campus possesses a wide range of attractions capable of offering visitors a rich cultural and historical experience. He announced that buses from the Ghana Tourism Authority would be made available for planned tours.

In her remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo described the University as a custodian of heritage. She observed that the campus, with its distinctive tropical architecture and record of producing African leaders, stands as a living monument.

According to her, Ghana’s historical journey, from powerful precolonial societies, through the transatlantic slave trade, to independence and contemporary dynamism, must be studied academically, experienced, interpreted and carried forward.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the commissioning of the GTDC Campus Tourism Desk is both appropriate and strategic, describing it as a deliberate bridge that connects classroom knowledge to living history.
