International Life at Music Department

The Music Department at the University of Ghana, from its earliest days, has been a haven for music students, faculty, scholars, and practitioners of every sort from around the globe. Amongst our more famous visitors have been composer Steve Reich (who spent a month here studying Ghanaian music), composer Lukas Ligeti, jazz musician Hugh Masekela, popular musician Stevie Wonder, and famed music scholar Akin Euba, who actually did his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology with us.

We are also at the nexus of scholarship across Africa, with links to other institutions and with frequent visits and lectures from leading African scholars in the diaspora, such as Kofi Agawu (CUNY, Princeton), Kwesi Ampene (Tufts, Northwestern), George Dor (University of Mississippi). At the heart of our raison d'etre, however, is our students, and each year, we welcome undergraduate and graduate students from across Africa and the world - both those studying music formally with us as well as those in other departments who join ensembles, use our facilities or take classes, and even non-affiliated visitors.
We would be delighted for you to join our close-knit family of students, faculty, and visiting scholars engaged in cutting-edge musical pursuits.

Prospective international students or international visitors/scholars should feel free to reach out to our international liaison and faculty member, Michael Okantah, at mookantah@ug.edu.gh with any questions.
