The Department of Music of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana has iconic status in Ghana and Africa and a history with roots that stretch back to Ghana’s independence. The department prides itself on being the “Gateway to African Music”, where the scholarly study of all musical cultures is encouraged and taught. Our students receive excellent training in the fundamentals of music rooted in African music.  

In line with the University’s vision, the department is committed to being a world-class research-intensive hub with a premium on excellence in scholarship and research. It boasts of alumni who are renowned scholars, composers, conductors, and performers who have made their mark from the concert halls of Africa to those of Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
