AFRICAN MATERIALS RESEARCH SOCIETY (AMRS) UG - CHAPTER LAUNCH

The African Materials Research Society (AMRS) UG-Chapter was launched at the School of Engineering Sciences by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering on the 16th of March 2018. In attendance were the patrons of the society, Professor Onwona-Agyeman, Dr. Dodoo-Arhin and Dr. Benjamin Agyei-Tuffour, faculty and students of the department.

The Head of Department, Dr. Abu Yaya officially launched the society after the society’s mission, vision and core values were highlighted by Dr. Benjamin Agyei-Tuffour. He indicated that the Society’s motto: “Establishing Networks, Promoting Materials Research” was very appropriate as the students and faculty must establish healthy relationships for research, job and internship opportunities with the industry and the corporate world. Dr. Agyei-Tuffour also highlighted the benefits of being part of the society and what roles it would play in furthering Materials Science and Engineering in Ghana. The chapter would work on five major pillars including: Academic Excellence, Research, Community and Industrial Outreach, and Promotion of Women and Girls in Engineering. It was refreshing to the members to hear that there shall not be the payment of membership dues and that the society will spear-heard innovative fund raising mechanism to support the activities of the chapter. The executive committee was introduced to the members and their duties and responsibilities were spelt out to them.

There were other advices and words of encouragement by the HOD, Dr. Abu Yaya and Dr. Bensah. Dr. Abu Yaya stressed the importance of having such a society in the department and the good it would do for all especially the students while Dr. Bensah shared some vital tips on how to run the society effectively. Possible activities by the society for the semester were discussed and then the floor was open for questions and contributions. Members were refreshed and the photography sessions followed after which the closing prayer brought the programme to a successful end.
