Brief History

DEPARTMENT OF HAEMATOLOGY

Korle-Bu Hospital Departments (Clinical & Paraclinical) were in existence before the UGMS adopted the Hospital as its Teaching Hospital.  It had a Haematology Department (MOH) in 1972 when Prof. Alex Bruce-Tagoe arrived.  The UGMS did not have a separate Department of Haematology but had a division of Haematology in the Pathology Department.
Dr. Talapatra was the head of the MOH Department of Haemtology and he was transfered when Prof. Alex Bruce-Tagoe arrived.  The latter became head of the MOH Haematology Department but taught Haematology under UGMS in the Department of Pathology.
The Department of Haematology in the UGMS was established in 1975 with Prof Alex Bruce-Tagoe as head.  He also assumed headship of the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics ( Sickle Cell Centre) which was previously headed by Prof. Konotey-Ahulu.
