The Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS), University of Ghana, warmly invites the University community and the general public to the launch of its Golden Jubilee, a year of stocktaking and celebration!
Fifty years of existence as an institute has been remarkable and we are connecting with all our internal and external stakeholders to join in to celebrate this milestone. We are inviting all our stakeholders to a high-level launch of this Golden Jubilee scheduled as follows:

His Excellency, the Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the Special Guest and Keynote Speaker of this event, which will be hosted the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo. The programme will also have in attendance, Dr. Grace Bediako, former Government Statistician and a proud RIPS alumna, Senior Management of the University, faculty, staff, students, alumni, UN agencies, development partners, industry stakeholders and the media.
RIPS was established in 1972, exactly 50 years this year, following an agreement between the United Nations and the Government of Ghana upon recommendation by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). This agreement was in response to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2211 in 1966 calling for the establishment of population training centres to train the required middle-level manpower to support the implementation of population programmes towards achieving sustainable development. The Institute had a regional mandate, and therefore, students were drawn from different countries within Anglophone Africa. To date, RIPS has trained close to 1,500 graduates who now occupy, or have held important positions in their respective countries and international organisations notably within the United Nations System.
Carrying the University’s Vision
The vision of RIPS is to be globally recognised as the leading centre for research and training in population/health science in Africa, contributing to the well-being and health of African communities through collaborative work within the Institute and with local communities. This is consistent with the University’s vision of becoming a world-class research-intensive university. RIPS has since established itself as a globally recognized leading centre for research and training in population studies and related disciplines. It has produced several graduates who have served, and continue to serve in many public and industry positions across Africa and other continents.
