Master of Arts (MA) English

The MA English programme provides advanced training in literary and linguistic studies through intensive coursework and scholarly engagement with contemporary debates in language, literature, culture, and communication. The programme is designed for graduates who wish to deepen their knowledge of English studies, strengthen their analytical and research skills, and prepare for professional or academic advancement.

Students engage with a wide range of areas, including literary criticism, African literature, discourse studies, language and society, stylistics, and contemporary theoretical approaches to language and literature. The programme also serves as a foundation for progression into research-based graduate studies.

Duration: One Year

 

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) English

The MPhil English programme is a research-intensive graduate degree that combines advanced coursework with independent scholarly research. It is intended for students seeking specialised knowledge in language studies, literary studies, and related areas of English scholarship.

The programme equips students with advanced research methods, theoretical expertise, and critical analytical skills. In addition to coursework, students undertake supervised thesis research that contributes to scholarly discussions within their chosen area of study.

Duration: Two Years

 

Master of Contemporary English Studies (MCES)

The Master of Contemporary English Studies (MCES) is an interdisciplinary Sandwich programme that examines the role of language, literature, communication, media, and culture in contemporary society. The programme combines academic inquiry with professional relevance, making it particularly suitable for educators, communication professionals, media practitioners, public sector workers, and individuals seeking advanced communication and analytical skills.

Students explore contemporary issues in discourse, media, professional communication, cultural studies, language use, and literary representation while developing practical competencies applicable to diverse professional contexts.

Duration: One Year

 

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) English

The PhD English programme is the Department’s highest research degree and is intended for candidates with strong academic backgrounds and demonstrated research potential. The programme focuses on the production of original scholarship in language, literature, culture, discourse, communication, and related fields.

Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, doctoral candidates undertake sustained and independent research that contributes new knowledge to the discipline. The programme prepares graduates for careers in academia, research, policy development, publishing, and other knowledge-intensive professions.

Duration: Four Years (Full-Time)
