CHINESE AMBASSADOR AWARDS BRILLIANT STUDENTS

The Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China in Ghana, Her Excellency Madam Sun Baohong has given awards to 15 brilliant Ghanaian students from the Chinese section of the Department of Modern Languages and Fifteen other students outside the Chinese Department who study Chinese with the Confucius Institute at a ceremony held at the Confucius Institute.

 

The ceremony is marked annually to give awards to non-Chinese students who have excelled in the study of the Chinese language and also to encourage the learning of the language. The awards were grouped into three tiers. Eight students won US$400 each from the second runner-up tier, four Students won US$500 each from the first runner-up tier and the final three winners were awarded with US$600 each. Fifteen other students outside the Chinese Department who study Chinese with the Confucius Institute were also awarded with a cash prize of GHS 500 each.

Her Excellency Madam Sun Baohong in an address stated that she is committed to deepening cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and Ghana as well as promote more exchanges between the two countries. She also urged the students to remain committed to the study of the Chinese Language and take advantage of further educational opportunities in the People’s Republic of China.

The Co-ordinator of the Chinese Department, Dr. Azanku extolled the ambassador for increasing the number of awardees from 10 to 15 and thanked her for the Embassy’s support to students on the year abroad programme.

On behalf of the award winners, Mr. Edward Joseph Yawson thanked the Ambassador for her encouragement and expressed appreciation to the lecturers at the Chinese Department and Confucius Institute for their support. Students of the Confucius Institute also presented the Ambassador with a gift.

 

The ceremony was also graced by the Dean of the School of Languages, Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, Dr. Mei Meilian the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana, the Ag Ghanaian Director Dr. Josephine Dzahene Quarshie, and the Secretary of the Ghana Chinese Friendship Association, Mr. Danny Easmon Mawuenyega, as well as a cross-section of the Chinese Business community in Ghana.
