Graduate Admission

Overview

The graduate biomedical engineering programmes at the University of Ghana offer advanced education and research opportunities in the field of biomedical engineering. These programmes are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle complex healthcare challenges through engineering solutions. These programmes are ideal for those looking to advance their expertise and make significant contributions to the field of biomedical engineering.

Graduate Programmes

The department offers three different graduate programmes to meet the needs of its stakeholders. Students can enrol in a Master of Engineering (MEng), a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Details of these programmes are outlined below.

MEng in Biomedical Engineering

This is a 1-year programme for working Biomedical Engineers to expand their expertise in one of three thematic areas:

  1. Implant Science and Regenerative Engineering
  2. Computational Biology and Modelling
  3. Bioinstrumentation

MPhil in Biomedical Engineering

This is a 2-year programme designed to provide advanced education and research opportunities to graduates. Students undertake a significant research project in their second year and are equipped for careers in academia, research institutions, healthcare facilities and the biomedical industry. This program is ideal for those looking to deepen their expertise and engage in impactful research in the field of biomedical engineering.

PhD in Biomedical Engineering

The PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana is a rigorous and research-intensive program designed to develop experts in the field of biomedical engineering. It aims to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills to address complex healthcare challenges through innovative engineering solutions. This is typically a 4-year research programme with advanced coursework in biomedical engineering, research methodology and specialised electives tailored to the student's research interests.

Tuition Method

Lectures, group assignments, case studies/reviews, class presentations, project work, field visits and seminars.

Entry Requirement

MEng & MPhil

Students applying for admission to MEng/MPhil Biomedical Engineering must have obtained a good first degree, at least second-class lower division in Biomedical Engineering or related disciplines from the University of Ghana or any other recognized University.

PhD

A good master’s degree (with thesis) in the field of Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline from an internationally recognized university or institution will be required for admission. A candidate will be required to submit a research proposal for assessment before admission. An interview will also be conducted by the department before admission.
