Aim
The purpose of the SLT programme is to train speech and language therapists with sound knowledge and skills in the identification, treatment and prevention of communication and/or swallowing disorders. It combines theoretical knowledge with clinical practice in order for students to gain hands-on experience.
Objectives
At the end of the programme, the trained speech and language therapist will be able to:
● Demonstrate a high level of competence in the practice of speech and language therapy.
● Identify the needs of the individual clients with communication and/or swallowing disorders through assessments and then determine the objectives of client management.
● Evaluate, interpret and make clinical decisions based on assessment results.
● Implement appropriate treatment for persons with communication and/or swallowing disorders.
● Critically evaluate their own role and performance within an inter-disciplinary team.
● Demonstrate an appreciation of management strategies within health care.
● Discuss and evaluate the role of speech and language therapy within the field of preventive health care.
● Carry out research in the area of speech and language therapy.
● Understand and implement ethical practices in the provision of speech and language therapy services.
● Train others to work with persons with communication disorders in Ghana.
