Brief History

Speech and language therapists (SLT) are professionals with specialist training in communication and swallowing. In countries with more developed health and rehabilitation services, Speech and language therapists are typically a key part of rehabilitation and child development services. They provide assessment and therapy for people with communication or swallowing difficulties. This ensures that these people go on to have the best possible opportunity to participate in everyday activities, such as work, education and social interaction.

                                                                                                                

The University of Ghana is now well placed to commence SLT training as it:

1.         Now employs 3 foreign trained SLT teaching and clinical staff within the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences. The university is currently in the last stages of employing three additional professional SLT to augment teaching and clinical staff in the department.

2.         Has two faculty members enrolled in a fully funded PhD programme at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and the Charles Sturt University in Australia.

3.         Is establishing links for outside collaboration to support the early phases of SLT training, to ensure a high standard of teaching.
