A major deliverable of this project is an assessment of the utility of groundwater resources in the Nasia Basin for irrigation and other income generation activities in the basin. Obed’s PhD thesis is focused on determining the irrigation water requirements of the various crops cultivated in the area. He also estimated variations in irrigation water demands that may accrue from increasing temperatures and evapotranspiration rates arising from projected climate change over the terrain, Obed has also conducted analysis of the hydraulic properties of the material in the unsaturated zone and groundwater recharge estimates. Obed has also characterized the irrigation quality of groundwater resources using conventional indices. He obtained historical data from various sources including the Hydrogeological Assessment Project (HAP) database of the Water Resources Commission (WRC), Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Hydrological Services Department, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and the Ghana Meteorological Services Agency. He participated in elaborate field activities including:

  • Detailed geological mapping of the Nasia Basin;
  • Geophysical surveying to map out the nature and variations in the thickness of the weathered zone in the basin;
  • Borehole drilling: Conducted drilling of 20 shallow wells to study the nature and variations in the thickness of the weathered zone; 10 deep wells were drilled to serve as monitoring wells;
  • Pumping test in new boreholes; installation of data loggers to obtain time series water level data;
  • Groundwater sampling and mapping of floodplains.

Obed is in the final stages of the thesis, which will be submitted to the School of Graduate Studies for examination.
