Prof. Dilys S. MacCarthy is an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana and a former Head of the Soil & Irrigation Research Centre. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources Management from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana, followed by her Master's and PhD degrees from the University of Bonn, Germany. Her expertise spans Plant Nutrition, Soil Fertility, and Agronomy.
Prof. MacCarthy teaches Agricultural Systems Simulation and Modelling at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her research focuses primarily on integrated nutrient management in cereals within smallholder farming systems. She has been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Cambridge-Africa Partnership for Research Excellence (CAPREx) and is also actively involved in climate change risk and impact assessments in West African smallholder systems. She leads the West African team of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) and collaborates with several CGIAR centers, including ICRISAT and IITA, on the use of crop models in smallholder farming contexts.
Throughout her career, she has served on various scientific committees, such as those for iCROPM 2020 in Montpellier, France, and the 9th Soil Organic Matter Conference in Morocco. She has also been an invited speaker at events like the Sorghum Conference in Montpellier and a panelist at the United Nations General Assembly side event "Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils: Global Solutions for Food Security," organized by the Rockefeller Foundation in 2023.
Prof. MacCarthy serves on the editorial boards of Frontiers in Food Systems, Forest and Agricultural Meteorology, and CABI Agriculture and Biosciences, and reviews manuscripts for numerous international peer-reviewed journals.
