Master of Art (M.A) Sandwich Study of Religions
Aims
The Master of Arts (Sandwich), Study of Religions aims at:
- Addressing the dangers involved in inadequate theological training being offered by some Bible Colleges by providing better alternatives.
- Equipping students with requisite knowledge to contextualize Christianity and Islam in Africa.
- Providing avenues for teachers and others, who due to diverse constraints cannot enroll for regular graduate level programmes to acquire the MA degree.
Objectives
The Objectives of the programme are as follows:
- Students should be able to exhibit knowledge of new and emerging issues in Religion.
- Students should acquire skills of theological analyses for religious issues, debates and discourses.
- Students would have been equipped to participate in further research in the Study of Religions.

Entry Requirement
Normally, a good first degree in Religious Studies or the Study of Religions is required for admission to the M.A programmes. In exceptional cases a candidate who is otherwise adjudged suitable may be admitted as a Special Admission candidate. Candidates offering Biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek must have studied Hebrew and Greek to B.A. or Diploma Level; those offering Classical Arabic must have studied Arabic to G.C.E. ‘A’ Level.

Master of Philosophy (M.PHIL) Study of Religions
Aims
The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) Study of Religions, at the University of Ghana, is a two-year full-time program offering diverse opportunities for in-depth study in any sub-discipline of students’ interest within the Study of Religions. It aims at:
- Critical study and research towards mastery in any area of Biblical Studies; Church History and Missions; History of Religions; Islamic Studies; and Philosophy, Ethics and Theology.
- Equipping students with interests in a doctoral degree a rigorous training in research theory and methods, aimed at developing cutting edge skills and expertise in the students.
Objectives
At the end of the program, students will be expected to exhibit the following:
- Develop the ability to analyse and synthesize information and ideas with sophistication and complexity with conceptual or theoretical clarity.
- Acquire comparable skills in research methods generally in the Study of Religions, and within the sub-disciplinary areas of the Study of Religion.
- Demonstrate a new and significant contribution knowledge in the sub-discipline of study, through the researching, writing and submission of a thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy (PHD) Study of Religions
Aims of Programme
To ground candidates in their areas of interest within the broad sub-disciplines of Biblical Studies, Church History and Missions, History of Religions, Theology and Philosophy of Religion and Islamic Studies.
- To train and equip doctoral students in rigorous research methodologies and knowledge production
- Ground candidates in a specialised area of research in the Study of Religions
Objectives of Programme
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Expose students to the five disciplinary areas of specialisation in the Department; Biblical Studies, Church History and Missions, History of Religions, Theology and Philosophy of Religion and Islamic Studies.
- To equip students with the specialised expertise to engage and contribute to discourse through research and publication.
- To nurture and produce high calibre of scholars for tertiary institutions in the country and beyond.

Entry Requirement
Only persons with a degree in the Study of Religions / Religious Studies or Theology may apply.
- Candidates applying with a first degree
- Candidates with a good first degree may apply for admission into a PhD programme.
- The first-degree holder applicants will be given conditional admission letters by the School of Graduate Studies
- They shall take prescribed courses (level 600 courses) in the first year
- On completion of the level 600 courses, candidates will be assessed, and may progress into PhD depending on performance.
- Candidates who are not able to progress into PhD will undertake their M Phil thesis research and on successful completion, will be awarded an M Phil degree.
- Candidates who progress into PhD will be given conditional admission into the PhD programme. They shall take level 700 courses and continue to fulfill the requirements as outlined in section B.
- Candidates who are unable to meet the criteria for research degree may be offered the option to undertake an MA/MSc. dissertation.
- Candidates applying with a master’s degree (e.g MA/MSc/MPH/MBA/MPhil)
- Candidates with a master’s degree may apply into a PhD programme.
- Such candidates will be given conditional admission letters by the School of Graduate Studies.
- They shall take prescribed courses (level 700 courses) in Year 1 as well as “make-up-courses”, as necessary, in years 1 and 2.
- Candidates will be assessed on successful completion of the prescribed courses, and may progress to the PhD depending on performance.
- Candidates who qualify to progress to PhD will be admitted to the PhD programme.
Candidates who are unable to meet the criteria may be offered the option to do an MPhil, in which case, they shall proceed to undertake an MPhil thesis research.
