ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
Benoit Banga N'guessan, Senior lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, is the Examinations Officer of the University of Ghana School of Pharmacy since 2013. He obtained his PhD and MPhil in Pharmacology at University of Strasbourg (former Louis-Pasteur University) in France. In 2004, he was appointed Lecturer at Nangui-Abrogoua University (former Abobo-Adjame University, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire) and was promoted Senior Lecturer in 2007. He is the founding chairman of the NGO PRORESMAT (Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire) that promotes the scientific valuation of traditional African medicine. He joined the University of Ghana in April 2012. His research interests are Ethnopharmacology and drug discovery in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, diarrhea, asthma and cancer.
AREA OF SPECIALIZATION
COURSES TAUGHT CURRENTLY
RESEARCH INTERESTS
How can traditional African medicine become a credible alternative to the conventional management of patients living with non-communicable diseases? I am interested in the ethnopharmacological approach for the selection and identification of medicinal plants, and the investigation of their pharmacological efficacy and toxicological safety, by the use of simple and appropriate methods that will lead to their scientific valuation and consequently to drug discovery. The fruitful collaboration with the herbalists led to many ethnopharmacological surveys concluded by the collection and identification of several medicinal plants used in the management of hypertension, diabetes, diarrhea, asthma and cancer. Our recent published results have shown promising pharmacological properties of these medicinal plants and therefore justified their traditional use in the management of non-communicable diseases. I am also interested in the production of improved traditional medicines based on our findings, as well as the discovery and patenting of novel active ingredient isolated from the ethnopharmacologically-selected medicinal plants.
