Welcome to the Department of Physics at the University of Ghana. It is a privilege to lead one of the oldest and most respected departments in the University, established in 1948 among the pioneer departments of the University College of the Gold Coast.

Over the decades, the Department has trained generations of physicists and scientists who now serve with distinction in academia, industry, and public service across Ghana and beyond. It also gave rise to the Department of Computer Science and to the Radio-Isotope Unit that became the first laboratory of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, a legacy of which we remain proud.

Physics is the foundation of our understanding of nature, from the subatomic scale to the structure of the cosmos. In our Department, we pursue this understanding through rigorous teaching, curiosity-driven research, and applied work that speaks to national and continental priorities. Our staff and students form a vibrant, collaborative community committed to excellence and to the values of integrity, commitment, respect, and loyalty that define the University of Ghana.

In line with the University's vision of becoming a research-intensive institution, and the shared ambition of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences and the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences to achieve international recognition, we continue to strengthen our programmes, expand our research output, and develop solutions to the pressing problems facing our country and continent.
