THE MINI-ASESMA 2026 WORKSHOP

Date
8th June, 2026
Venue
Department of Physics, University of Ghana, Legon-Accra

This is a 2-week teaching-oriented training program on electronic structure methods, designed to strengthen physics education, and hands-on computational skills in Africa, in line with the mission of Physics Without Frontiers (PWF)

The workshop will combine carefully structured theoretical lectures, including core concepts from quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, with intensive hands-on sessions, enabling participants to directly apply these foundations to Density Functional Theory (DFT), electronic structure calculations, and material modeling using the open-source Quantum ESPRESSO package.

The primary target participants are fourth-year undergraduate students, MPhil students, and early career researchers, for whom early exposure to both theory and practical simulation is crucial for academic and research development.

By focusing on teaching and guided practice, the workshop aims to equip participants with foundational skills needed for independent research and further post-graduate training.

The workshop will be hosted at the Department of Physics, University of Ghana, and will serve as a regional capacity-building initiative in computational physics and material science.
