Overview
The first year of the programme had Twenty-five (25) students enrolled, and the current student number of level 100 is one hundred and fifty (150). The courses offered to students have exposed them to the sports industry terrain and to the understanding of the sport management enterprise. The course has further exposed students to the understanding of sports development and sport for development. Historically, the programme is named Sport and Physical Culture Studies to train a new cadre of personnel to influence the sport enterprise in Ghana. In a sense to build a strong physical culture in the management of sports. Hence the name, Sport and Physical Culture Studies. Remarkably, students have been sensitised to the role of sports management in the overall outlook of global sport. Learners have acquired adequate skills for social and business entrepreneurship and are confident to transform the sports landscape of Ghana. This is evident through various sports events, community services, and projects they pursued in small groups.
Aims & Objectives
To develop capacity to improve the management of sport in Ghana; the Department of Physical Education and Sport of the School of Education and Leadership at the University of Ghana is introducing a four-year Bachelor of Arts programmes to:
1. Prepare students to be effective Sport Management Practitioners in the Sport Industry in Ghana.
2. Use data from Sport Management contexts to inform their practice through engagement in action research focusing on the Evaluation of Sport Policies, Interventions, and practices in the Ghanaian context.
3. Develop an understanding of how Effective Sport Management is achieved in Diverse International contexts.
Tuition Method
Lectures, group assignments, class presentations, project work, field visits and seminars.
Entry Requirement
An applicant for admission to a BA Sport and Physical Culture Studies in the University of Ghana must have at least credits (A1 - C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science and three elective subjects, with the total aggregate not exceeding 24. An applicant who possesses Diploma in sports Coaching, sports management, physical education or Equivalent Diploma will be admitted into the Second (2nd) Year of the Programme. Applicants must also pass an interview. Applicants may be admitted into the SECOND or THIRD YEAR based on performance at the interview.
