Office of the Principal

I am honored to serve as the Acting Principal of the University of Ghana Kumasi City Campus (UGKCC), where students come first. UGKCC boast of a vibrant student body, dedicated staff, and renowned faculty. As the Acting Principal of the UGKCC, I welcome you to our website and campus. At UGKCC, we embrace personalized relationship-based education in which we know our students as individuals, high-quality programmes that prepare tomorrow's workforce, and an emphasis on equity that extends across all aspects of our work. We equip our students to be great business professionals, ready to confront the demands of an increasingly global and dynamic corporate environment. Our academic members are noted for their dedication to teaching while also conducting significant research in their fields.

The University of Ghana City Campus has built and maintained a friendly environment that fosters high levels of interaction amongst students, faculty, and staff. We are proud of the wide range of leadership and professional development opportunities available to our students through our numerous student clubs, the Career Resource Centre, and internships. As one of the three University of Ghana City Campuses, we are dedicated to instilling curiosity and critical thinking, broadening horizons of understanding, serving the people of the Greater Kumasi Area and the larger common good, and promoting an institutional culture that fosters mutual respect for all.

As a city campus, we are committed to expanding possibilities and minimizing barriers to curiosity, creativity, and learning for everyone in Kumasi and beyond. Of all the actions we take every day to advance these core values, we should never underestimate the positive impact of assisting a new student in navigating the campus during the first week of the semester, greeting a new member of our campus community, or directing students, staff, and faculty to relevant campus and community resources. We demonstrate that everyone is welcome and belongs at the University of Ghana's College of Education through our daily and repeated acts of care and respect.

I am pleased about the opportunities ahead of us and grateful to be working with such dedicated faculty, staff, and students. I am always keen on hearing your thoughts and suggestions about how we may make the Kumasi City Campus interesting and enjoyable.

History of Kumasi City Campus

The University of Ghana Kumasi City Campus was established in 1962 as the Kumasi Workers College and served as the regional branch of the then Institute of Public Education. It was first located at the Adum Commercial area and later relocated to the Mancell’s Vocational Institute at Oduom, which is directly opposite the current St. Louis Girls Senior High School. The movements were occasioned by the fact that the College did not have its own facilities at that time. The College operated as the extension wing of the University of Ghana and engaged in both formal and informal programmes to reach out to workers, especially those who could not afford to attend lectures at the main campus in Legon but were desirous of upgrading themselves by acquiring the relevant basic knowledge and skills as well as pursuing a university education. In this regard, the General Certificate in Education (GCE) Ordinary and Advanced levels and the Mature Entrance Examinations were run by the College. In addition, non-formal programmes such as functional literacy programmes and public educational programmes on topical national issues in the form of public lectures, seminars, workshops, symposia, and conferences were organized. Income-generating activities such as bee-keeping, pottery-making, mushroom and snail farming and tree planting were also organized for various communities. Subsequently, formal programmes such as the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) regular and remedial, Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) and Secretarial programme were introduced.

In 1993, the College moved to its present building located directly opposite the second gate of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) in the Amakom area of the Kumasi metropolis. The Centre also has a residential facility at Asokwa and two self-contained bungalows at Buokrom. The City Campus has a vast land of about 3.8 acres (16 plots), which is yet to be developed.

Following approval by the University in 2007, the Kumasi Workers College began offering Distance Education Programmes in Bachelor of Science in Administration, Bachelor of Arts, and Diploma in Public Administration, among others.

In August 2014, the University of Ghana adopted the collegiate system, and the Workers’ Colleges were designated as University of Ghana Learning Centres. The Kumasi Workers College was, therefore, renamed the Kumasi Learning Centre.

On February 12, 2018, the Management of the University considered a proposal from the College of Education to transform the University of Ghana Learning Centres into satellite campuses. Some of the justifications for the concept were to enable the University of Ghana to accommodate the large number of students that would be available under the flagship Free Senior High School policy, to provide demand-driven courses, and to de congest the main campus.

Management, after careful consideration, requested that a comprehensive proposal should be developed, setting out the structural framework, marketing and financial architecture, and implementation phases. The resulting document was to be routed through the College Academic Board for further consideration by Management. On April 12, 2019, the College Academic Board considered the revised proposal. It recommended that two of the Regional Learning Centres, namely Kumasi and Takoradi, could be converted into City Campuses, with the other centres to be considered in the future.

The University Academic Board subsequently considered the proposal on July 12, 2019 and approved it for further consideration by the University Council. In a letter dated August 21, 2019, the Acting Provost of the College of Education appointed a committee chaired by Professor Yaw Oheneba-Sakyi to define a roadmap for the establishment of City Campuses in Kumasi and Takoradi.

Following the approval of the establishment of the University’s City Campuses in Kumasi and Takoradi by the University Council in October 2019, the College of Education submitted an implementation plan to management, outlining critical areas that require immediate interventions and actions for a smooth take-off.

Subsequently, another committee was constituted with Professor Mohammed Aminu as chairman to devise a sustainable financial and marketing strategy for the campuses. The report of that committee was submitted to Management on June 15, 2021.

In September 2021, the then Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, set up the City Campuses Implementation Committee, chaired by Professor Charity Akotia to implement the University Council’s decision. The Committee’s mandate was to comprehensively examine the implementation plan and the financial and marketing strategies developed for the new campuses and make appropriate recommendations for the smooth take-off of the City Campuses.

After extensive engagement with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Kumasi City Campus was granted institutional accreditation on March 24, 2023, to operate as a public tertiary education campus of the University of Ghana with effect from April 1, 2023. Subsequently, accreditation was granted for the BSc Administration programme to be offered on the campus in November 2023.
