The objectives of this course are to equip students with the requisite knowledge in data and computer communication and its applications and be able to appreciate the immense contribution from the field of data and computer communications research. The topics covered include the history and overview of information transmission. Fundamental principles: telecommunication signals and their representation, building blocks of a telecommunication system, description of communication system types, basic concepts of signal transmission in transmission media, time and frequency signal bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio, channel and channel capacity, sampling theorem. Linear communication techniques: amplitude modulation process, frequency modulation process, phase modulation process, multiplexing strategies.
