This course is to equip students with knowledge and skills in the general principles of engineering design and provide students with the opportunity to apply the engineering design process in identifying a problem, researching, considering alternative solutions, designing the chosen solution, testing, and presenting the solution. This course includes Introduction to engineering design: Definition of engineering design, systematic design, professionalism, and ethics. Essential transferable skills: forming teams, team dynamics, technical writing, and presentation style. Identifying needs and gathering information: Customer requirements: customer needs assessment, outlining specifications, developing concepts: Designing product drawings, prototype, safety consideration, human factors, ergonomics, material selection, dimensioning and tolerancing, cost analysis.
