CFAS Holds Webinar on Parkinson’s Disease Among Older Persons

The Centre for Ageing Studies organized a webinar that was titled, Parkinson’s disease among older persons: Causes, symptoms and treatment. This event was held on two separate days; Wednesday, May 11th, 2022 and Wednesday, June 15th, 2022. The presenter of this webinar was Dr. Albert Akplalu of the University of Ghana Medical School, and the Neurology Unit, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The moderator for both days was the Director of the Centre, Prof. Mavis Dako-Gyeke. The virtual event attracted over hundred participants across the globe.

Dr. Akpalu Delivering his presentation

In his presentation, Dr. Akpalu explained that Parkinson’s disease is a chronic condition that was initially rare in Africa, but this has changed in modern times. He also highlighted that the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease included forced closure of the eyelids, difficulty in speaking, increased sweating, difficulty in swallowing, sleepiness, and muscular weakness and aches, among others. The non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include mood and sleep disorders, as well as cognitive difficulties, such as having a challenge in staying focused, or doing multiple things at the same time. Given the adverse effects of this disease, Dr. Akpalu emphasized that efforts need to be made by health workers and caregivers to ensure that older persons with Parkinson’s disease receive adequate care and support to manage the condition. He also urged all persons present to take note of the symptoms of the disease and ensure to take persons who may display any of these symptoms to a health facility for medical examination.

After his presentation, some participants also seized the opportunity to ask questions, seek clarifications, and share their perspectives on the topic. The Director of the Centre also thanked all persons present for attending the event and encouraged them to patronize subsequent events.
