CFAS Holds Webinar on Ageing in Contemporary Ghana

The Centre for Ageing Studies organized its first webinar series for the year on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022. The topic for the Webinar was A Discourse on Ageing in Contemporary Ghana and was presented by Dr Paul Issahaku (Associate Professor, University of Newfoundland, Canada). The event was moderated by the Director of the Centre, Prof Mavis Dako-Gyeke. The virtual event attracted over eighty participants across the globe.

Dr Paul Issahaku (Associate Professor, School of Social Work, Memorial University of Newfoundland)

Dr Issahaku’s presentation outlined findings from a discourse analysis research that sought to ascertain the meanings ascribed to growing old in contemporary Ghana. Per the research findings presented at the webinar, it could be inferred that while aging is associated with a high social status and seniority in society, it could also bring about some uncertainties in a person’s social relations. Furthermore, growing old increases one’s likelihood of being vulnerable to frailty, diseases, helplessness, and death. Dr Issahaku concluded his presentation by highlighting the theory and practical implications of his research findings and urged that more research studies are required to unravel findings on this key area.
