Call for Abstracts - 2021

Fifth Annual International Research Conference

Theme: Facilitating Friendly Communities for Older People

Extant research indicates that no country on the globe is immune to population ageing. This is mainly as a result of the vast improvements made in the healthcare system, thereby increasing life expectancy. While it is noted that the increase in life expectancy is a vital human achievement, it presents enormous long term care needs for older people. This is because the steady rise in the population of older people makes them liable to suffer some health and social challenges, given the probable onset of frailty and functional impairment during this age period. Research studies show that many older people experience some difficulty in performing crucial activities of daily living. Furthermore, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has the propensity of exacerbating the quality of life of older people as the pandemic could have adverse effects on their physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

While it is factual that there is a gradual decline in kinship support for older people to enable them meet their needs, formal state support in third world countries, especially those in the Sub-Sahara African region have been inadequate. Of much concern is the unmet needs of many older people, as well as the lack of policy direction on how to facilitate friendly communities for them. The aforementioned plights of older people call for the need for researchers and other stakeholders to work together in order to devise solutions that could make society a safe haven for older people. This 5th Annual International Research Conference provides an avenue for scholars, graduate students, practitioners, policy actors and other key stakeholders to deliberate and share evidence-based research, ideas, and recommendations that could be harnessed to address the concerns of older people.
