Research Interest

Telecommunication applications are widespread, ranging from global network to desktop computers. These involve the transmission of voice, data or video over distances less than a meter to hundreds or even thousands of kilometers. Research and development of optical fiber transmission systems are driven by two fundamental challenges: increasing the fiber capacity and expanding the transmission distance. Optical communication has become one of the most important parts in modern communication due to the explosive growth of internet data and services, and its development direction is all-optical network (AON) with high capacity and broad bandwidth. Recently, the transmitted data rate in backbone has reached 10 Tb/s. However, current switching and transmission schemes limit the transmission rate of the communication networks and causes “electronic bottleneck” on data processing and transmission. Enriching optical and all-optical communications and adding several techniques and concepts useful for traffic engineering will ensure robust, long haul optical transmission systems as presented in this interim report.

Current Research

A spectral amplitude code (SAC) is an encoding approach which is widely used in optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) and optical label switching (OLS) systems. It is considered as one of the most promising labelling techniques, due to its simple structure, high throughput, high speed and potential flexibility. The principle and implementation of the code are simply theoretical, and able to achieve the labelling of all-optical processing and decoding. SAC system has a cost-effective encoder and decoder due to the rapid development of filter components. Labels are encoded in wavelength domain and recognized by their amplitudes. Explicit and implicit labelling are both available in a SAC label switching system. In explicit label system, the label generated occupy different wavelength as the payload and are created, recognized, and extracted by basic procedures. In implicit label system, the label and payload are modulated to the same wavelength and transmitted in the same packet duration. The payload is ‘‘encoded’’ by the label and the SAC label ‘‘hides’’ in the payload signal. My current research is predominantly on technologies that can enable a more robust optical transmission in order to:

1. Develop high-efficiency all-optical label switching system to achieve high-speed network system.
2. Apply new multiplexing mode with optical time division multiplexing technology and dense wavelength division multiplexing.
3. Generate multi-frequency with a laser and Fabry-Perot tunable filter.
