On January 21, 2025, the Academic Quality Assurance Directorate (AQAD) of the University of Ghana participated in a live interview on Radio Universe, hosted by George and Faouzia. The discussion centered on the Course and Lecturer Evaluation (CLE) exercise for Level 200 medical students. AQAD was represented by Mr. Senyo Kofi G. Dordzi, Principal Research Assistant; Mr. Otoo Isaac, Principal Research Assistant; and Ms. Koranteng Sandra, Administrative Assistant.

imageMr. Dordzi provided insight into AQAD's mandate to uphold academic standards through surveys, research, and student feedback mechanisms. He emphasized the CLE process as a vital tool for assessing teaching quality and identifying areas for improvement. The Directorate also monitors examinations, healthcare services, financial aid, and accommodation to enhance the student experience.

Explaining the CLE initiative, Mr. Otoo highlighted that students can evaluate their lecturers based on semester-long experiences. The evaluation for Level 200 medical students commenced last week and is scheduled to end on Friday, January 24, 2025. Additionally, evaluations for regular undergraduate students will begin on Monday, January 27, 2025, and conclude on February 7, 2025. Mr. Otoo clarified that participation is voluntary, in line with research ethics, but strongly encouraged for its role in improving teaching and learning outcomes.

Addressing misconceptions about the CLE's compulsory nature, Mr. Dordzi explained the distinction between course confirmation and lecturer evaluation. Course confirmation ensures accurate registration for examinations, while lecturer evaluation provides valuable feedback for teaching improvements. He stressed the importance of honest, thoughtful responses to facilitate meaningful reforms.

Mr. Otoo reassured students about the anonymity of the process, noting that responses cannot be traced back to individuals. Lecturers only receive aggregated feedback after the class has graduated, ensuring a safe space for candid input. He urged students to provide constructive and professional feedback.

To participate, students must visit the STS portal and evaluate each course and its respective lecturer. For courses with multiple instructors, individual evaluations are required. Missing lecturer names can be reported to AQAD via email at aqad@ug.edu.gh

In addition to the CLE exercise, Mr. Otoo announced an ongoing survey on academic advising services. He noted that many students are unaware of their assigned advisors and encouraged participation in the brief survey distributed via email.

In conclusion, Mr. Dordzi reminded students not to procrastinate and to provide consistent, accurate feedback. He emphasized that thoughtful evaluations significantly contribute to academic quality enhancement at the University of Ghana.
