Vanessa Akuaku Wins Silver at Mansa Gold Holiday Tennis Tournament

University of Ghana Tennis prodigy and Ghana’s number four seed, Vanessa Kabukie Akuaku, has won silver medal at the Mansa Gold Holiday Tennis Tournament held at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club from 12th to 17th December, 2022.

The aim was to afford the professional women tennis players in the country more competitive games to keep them sharp and ready for future international competitions.

Vanessa Kabukie Akuaku lost the final to number one seed Anette Cruikshank, 6,0; 3,6; 2,6; to win silver. Vanessa, who had had a very decent calendar year, shared her assessment of the tournament and the year, stating that her objectives for the year were 85% achieved.

"I am impressed with my performance in the tournament and making it to the finals. The target was to win the ultimate; however, things didn’t go as planned. This year I participated in a number of tournaments, from national to international, winning a number of laurels in the process. The tournaments played this year were building blocks for me. The objective next year is to work harder to make the African Games to be hosted by Ghana and excel in terms of medals."

Vanessa recounted her performance at the 10th Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) Games held in June 2022 at the Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya, and the 27th Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games hosted by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in November 2022.

"My first outing for the University was this year at the FASU and GUSA Games. I managed to win five silver and one bronze medal in both competitions. Though impressive for a debutant, the goal is to win the gold medal. I will continue to make UG proud anytime I take to the court. I am grateful to management, staff, and teammates for the support."
