UG Ends Camping Ahead of 27th GUSA Games

The University of Ghana has ended preparations for the 27th Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games scheduled for 4th to 19th November, 2022 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

The University of Ghana (UG) will participate in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Football, Goalball, Handball, Hockey, Netball, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball at the Games.

The initial 302 student athletes invited to camp were later pruned to 250 after a week of camping. The athletes have gone through several drills and trial matches to get them in the right condition and form for the Games. The technical team also ensured that training times and matches were scheduled in tandem with the fixtures for the 27th GUSA Games.

The Head Coach, Mr. Henry Nii Sackey, shared more insight on the camp and UG’s readiness going into the games.

"The camping this year has been one of the best we have had. The commitment of the coaches and athletes has been very good. From the beginning, we have seen improvement in the athletes during training and the trial matches we played. The different times we had our trainings and trial matches and the frequency as well were all geared towards acclimatization. We are hopeful it will help the athletes cope with the weather conditions in Kumasi and perform to their optimum best to win the gold medals we desire."

In a farewell meeting, Management of the Sports Directorate commended the athletes for their discipline and commitment in camp. They reiterated that the University would continue to support them to excel. Management communicated that the wish of the Senior Management of the university is for them to etch their names in gold and add to the many laurels as part of the 75th Anniversary of the University.

The UG contingent is made up of two hundred and fifty (250) student athletes, two (2) student Leaders, nineteen (19) coaches, six (6) sports organizers, three (3) masseuses, a physiotherapist, a nurse, and an equipment officer. The Director of Sports and the Senior Assistant Registrar of the Sports Directorate will serve as Head of Delegation and Deputy Head of Delegation, respectively.

Team UG will depart Legon campus on 4th November, 2022 for Kumasi.
