UG ATHLETE WINS GOLD AT 2019 AFRICAN GAMES

University of Ghana’s Benjamin Kwaku Azamati won Gold in the 4x100 meters at the just ended African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

Benjamin Azamati, a level 300 student reading Bachelor of Science in Marine Science is the only local based athlete among the quartet which clinched the Gold medal.

Ghana’s Quartet Ends Sixteen Years Wait
With the exception of Sean Safo-Antwi, the trio of Benjamin Kwaku Azamati, Joseph Amoah and Martin Owusu Antwi are student athletes reading programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Ghana and USA.

The quartet blazing speed on the tracks ended the sixteen year wait for a Gold medal in the 4x100meters for Ghana. The team which is coached by Mr. Samuel Aryee and Christian Nsiah (a member of the 2003 Gold winning Team in Abuja) according to Mr. Azamati, was a significant push in calming their nerves and offering some strategies to help win the gold medal. Mr. Azamati shared his experience;

“The team is thrilled and excited with the output on the track. Personally I was nervous because this was the biggest stage in my career so far. My coaches played a key role as well as my team mates to motivate and push me for the 4x100 meters relay. The UG Sports Directorate and Coach Elorm Amenakpor were also instrumental in my development as an athlete and preparation towards the Games.  We are happy to end the 16 year wait and also put a smile on the faces of Ghanaians and the University of Ghana Community. We hope to do more of such in the World Athletics Championship to lift the face of Athletics in Ghana.”

The performance by the team gives them automatic qualification to the World Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar scheduled for 27th September to 6th October, 2019. Ghana will be the sole representative from Africa in this event at the world championship relishing to keep the torch burning as the beacon of Africa.

Mr. Benjamin Azamati will run the finals of Ghana’s Fastest Human National 100 meters Challenge on 7th September, 2019 at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi.
