Welcome by Head of Department
The departments of Philosophy and Classics were both created in 1948 as foundation units of the Faculty of Arts in what was then the University College of the Gold Coast. In 2010 these units merged into a Department of Philosophy and Classics.
The Philosophy Section employs analysis and reasoned argument in guiding students to understand the nature of existence and man’s place in it, and to answer fundamental questions about the various modes of human experience. Philosophy studies and teaches comprehensive systems of ideas relating to themes in several fields, the most primary of which are metaphysics (the theory of reality); epistemology (the theory of knowledge); ethics (the theory of moral values); politics (the theory of legitimation of political power, human rights, and public morality); African philosophy (the exploration of African orientatioon in philosophic thinking); and logic (principles and procedures of critical thinking).
The Classics Section concerns itself with a sustained reflection on and an analysis of the historical and cultural foundations of modern civilization. An interdisciplinary subject of great breadth, Classics provides a broad range of courses covering entire civilizations—languages (Greek and Latin), literature, education, religion, politics, history, philosophy, art and architecture, and more. Classics pursues insights and understanding of each mode of human experience through rigorous and appropriate analytic tools and methods.
The academic pursuit of Philosophy and Classics is an excellent way to develop historically informed, analytic and critical understanding of the historic and cultural foundations of modern civilization. The development of such a capacity prepares our graduates for all kinds of careers and professions. Thus our graduates are to be found in a broad range of careers and professions: in law, politics, teaching, foreign service, management, public administration, industry, and finance.
