Vital Information for Fresh International Students

Arrival

All fresh international undergraduate students are expected to arrive between Friday August 18 and Saturday August 26, 2017.

 

Airport pick up service will be provided by the International Programmes Office for fresh international undergraduate students during the stipulated dates upon request. Kindly send flight details and name to nspips@ug.edu.gh before August 16, 2017.

 

Students who arrive before or after the reporting dates may get an airport cab (taxi) located close to the Arrivals’ Hall, to convey them to the university campus. (Kindly note the cab’s registration number).

 

Taxis can be identified by their amber-coloured licensed plate. Note that, the taxi fares are negotiable and should be agreed on before boarding. It could be between thirty and fifty Ghana Cedis (GHC30 – GHC50). This information is also relevant to those who might arrive in Accra by road.

 

Payment of Fees

Fees must be paid in US dollars. This may be done online, by wire or by direct deposit as outlined below. Should you choose to make payment by wire or direct deposit, kindly ensure that your name and student ID number are clearly written on the pay-in-slip. Your pay-in-slip will be required for registration on campus.

Accommodation

Ø  Students can opt for accommodation at the International Students Hostel (ISH) which is on a first come-first served basis due to the limited number of rooms.

Ø  Rooms at the International Students Hostel are furnished with a bed, desk, chair and wardrobe. It is the responsibility of the students to provide for themselves bed linens, pillows and any other required items.

Ø  The Office of International Programmes can however facilitate accommodation in any of the on-campus housing facilities.

Ø  You can indicate your preference of accommodation before Wednesday, August 16, 2017 to nspips@ug.edu.gh.

Orientation

International Programmes Office (IPO) will organize MANDATORY mini-orientation sessions for fresh international students daily from 18th to 26th of August, 2017 at the Seminar room (Ground Floor, Right Wing)  of the International House located off the Annie Jiagge Road, opposite the School of Law from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm (Each day).

The university’s main orientation for all fresh students is on Wednesday, August 30 - Saturday, September 2, 2017. Note that this is also mandatory for all fresh students.

 

Registration

Students are to report for registration at the International Programmes Office from August 18 to 26, 2017 with the following:

Ø  Copy of admission letter

Ø  Proof of payment of fees or wire transfer details

Ø  At registration, students who do not have photographs in the university’s data base will be required to provide passport-sized photographs of their full face; Students ID cards may be collected from the International Programmes office after ten (10) working days.

Teaching / Examination

Teaching begins on September 4, 2017. 

 

Matriculation

Students are expected to attend a mandatory matriculation on September 16, 2017.

 

Non-Citizen Ghana Card and Residence Permit

Ø  Kindly note that all eligible foreign nationals living in Ghana are required by law to register and have a Non-Citizen Card. The Non-Citizen Card is a national identity card for internationals which costs US$120. It is a requisite for obtaining a Residence Permit. Please ensure you get this from the National Identification Authority Offices as soon as you arrive in Ghana. For more information please click on the link http://www.fims.org.gh/m/aboutusdoc.  

Ø  Obtaining a resident’s permit is also a requirement by the Ghana Immigration Service. An amount of fifty US dollars ($50) per year is charged for the permit. Students must pay this amount separately at the university’s cash office and collect a form from IPO with the receipt during registration.

 

Other Information

Ghana uses the UK’s BS 1363 standard for plugs and sockets. This uses the 3 pin system and has a voltage of 240 volts. Please take note of this when acquiring any electrical appliances, especially chargers for mobile phones.
