Dr. Ebenezer Adjetey-Sorsey presented on Post-Colonial Ageing Policies and Legal Perspectives in Ghana specifically policies that are relevant to the present situations of older persons. Some of the Ghanaian policies he presented and discussed with members included the overall 1992 Constitution of Ghana which provided some policies like the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) meant to support older persons with no source of income, Pension Policies also meant to support retired persons by providing monthly allowances, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) meant to support members, including older persons, with medical care and some social protection strategies that are meant to protect older persons from all forms of discrimination, abuse or violence within the Ghanaian society as they form part of vulnerable groups.

The Presenter concluded his presentation with discussions concerning the Ghanaian Income Intervention Scheme which was a 3-tier system. He highlighted two major problems with the scheme:

  • Lack of research and consultation before drafting Policies: According to the presenter, there was not enough research and consultation conducted pertaining to matters of older persons because of the “know-all” attitude of some leaders.
  • Political Agenda: According to the presenter’s observation, issues of older persons were gradually becoming a political agenda for public gains rather than a policy agenda meant to solve pending pressing issues.

Some participants took turns to ask questions and they received appropriate answers from the presenter. The moderator, Director of the Centre, Prof. Mavis Dako-Gyeke thanked the presenter for the insightful, informative, and educative presentation given, and further expressed her gratitude to the participants for their time and making the webinar a success.
