Research Interest
Research into the use of biomass boards produced from agricultural residue for water conservation, erosion mitigation and weed control. Through the use of a rainfall simulator studies are ongoing to determine the effectiveness of the biomass boards to mitigate erosion and conserve moisture in the soil aimed at increasing food production especially in the dry season. Another project that is currently being carried out with other colleagues is to develop a fully automated solar powered drip irrigation system for small scale farmers.
Current Research/Project
This project will enhance the resilience towards increasing temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns in smallholder vegetable farming communities through the use of oil palm Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) as an organic mulch, identification of climate resilient vegetable varieties, simple irrigation infrastructure and rainwater harvesting technologies in a participatory approach. Evaluate the effect of EFB applied raw or pyrolyzed on soil physical, chemical and biological quality, and GHG emissions.
Greenhouse screening of existing and new garden eggs and okra varieties adapted to increasing temperatures, drought and pests and diseases. Strengthen farmers’ resilience to climate change to enhance vegetable production through rainwater harvesting, and climate-smart irrigation infrastructure. Analyze the socio-economic preconditions and impacts of irrigation, EFB amendments and selected climate resilient okra and garden eggs varieties on farmers’ income. Propose a new contract farming model where the required investment for technology adoption is provided by agromarketing companies and paid off through the purchase contracts on farmers produce. Disseminate the results of the proposed technologies (solar powered drip and gun irrigation, EFB amendments and climate resilient okra and garden eggs varieties) and provide guidelines to farmers on the implementation of the technologies.
