Vice-Chancellor highlights the role of African Languages and Indigenous Knowledge in shaping Inclusive AI
African innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), together with the continent’s rich linguistic diversity and indigenous knowledge systems, continues to influence global discussions on technology, inclusion and digital transformation.
Speaking at the Distinguished Africa Lecture 2026 hosted by the University of Warwick, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, delivered an insightful presentation on the importance of ensuring that African languages and knowledge systems are adequately represented in the development of AI technologies.
Her address explored how Africa can contribute to building AI systems that are inclusive, context-aware and reflective of the continent’s cultural and linguistic realities, while positioning African knowledge as a vital component of the global digital future.
