Championing STEM Education for Girls: Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Launches Africa Educates Her (AEH) Campaign - Phase II

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has emphasised the importance of ensuring that girls, regardless of their background or location, have access to quality education and the resources needed to excel. She delivered these remarks while serving as the Chairperson at the official launch of Phase II of the Africa Educates Her (AEH) campaign, organised by the African Union International Centre for Girls’ and Women’s Education in Africa.

Prof. Amfo reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting girls' education through the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA), ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to succeed and lead in the future.

In her remarks as Chairperson, she emphasised the importance of STEM education and said, “In the evolving digital age, STEM education stands as a beacon of opportunity. We must encourage our girls to venture into areas underrepresented by women: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These fields open doors to countless possibilities and enable them to contribute meaningfully in this ever-evolving 21st-century job market.”

Prof. Smile Dzisi, Deputy Director-General (Management Service) of the Ghana Education Service, and Guest Speaker Prof. Nana Ama Brown Klutse, Acting CEO of the Environmental Protection Agency in Ghana, also made presentations at the launch.

A panel discussion, led by Mrs. Rhoda Enchil, Programme Officer at UNICEF Ghana, titled “Unlocking Girls’ Potential - STEM and Beyond,” highlighted diverse strategies and perspectives on encouraging girls' participation in STEM education.

The event was attended by students from selected basic and Senior High Schools.

Organised by the African Union International Centre for Girls’ and Women’s Education in Africa, the launch of the AEH Campaign (Phase II) is a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and its Girls’ Education Unit (GEU) under the auspices of the Ministry of Education (MOE) supported by CEGENSA.

The #AfricaEducatesHer Campaign is a call to action for collective commitment to securing the educational rights of every African girl. The campaign was first launched by the African Union International Centre for Girls' and Women's Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) in 2020 in response to the devastating disruptions caused by COVID-19 on education systems across Africa.
