Review Meeting and Training Workshop for PhD Students

A two-day workshop was been organised for the scholarship holders of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation projects at the University of Ghana on April 8th and 9th, 2021. The programme was organised in two parts: receipt of progress reports of the PhD students under the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation project titled: Enhancing Capacity and Postgraduate Education in the Humanities at the University of Ghana (ENCAPEH@UG) in Day 1. All 10 PhD students made an oral presentation on the progress made on their research projects and received feedback from the Principal Investigators.  In Day 2, the PhD students on the project were taken through training in qualitative research methodology by three experienced professors of the University.

The training workshop started with a presentation on Qualitative Methodology from the Director of the Centre for Social Policy Studies (CSPs), University of Ghana, Professor Nana Akua Anyidoho. Her presentation focused on qualitative research methodology and why a researcher needed to choose this methodology in research work.

On the other hand, the Principal Investigator on the project, Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah, presented on How to get a PhD. He took students through the PhD process and the mentality and character students should put up during the period of studies. His presentation was followed by Professor Helen A. Yitah who presented on Academic Discourse, the PhD Thesis Language and Writing Style of the Thesis. These were highly interactive presentations, which elicited several questions and comments.

The students expressed their appreciation to the project administration for putting together this workshop and hope that several of these workshops would be organised in future.
