UNIVERSITY OF GHANA TO PARTICIPATE IN 5TH ALL AFRICA UNIVERSITIES CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

The University of Ghana (UG) will participate in the 5th All Africa Universities Cross Country Championship at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya on Saturday, 20th November 2021. It will be the first time the University of Ghana is participating in this Championship which is being organised by the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU).

Training

Aziz Mohammed and Ishmael Offeh Acheampong both, first year Diploma in Public Administration and Bachelor of Arts Political Science and Geography respectively have been training throughout the semester. They have shown a lot of commitment and hard work during the training sessions as they seek to reduce their times. Aziz and Ishmael participated in the Ghana Armed Forces Games in October 2021 winning gold in the 1500 and 800 meters respectively.

Aziz who is a three time defending champion in 800, 1500 and 5000 meters in the Central Region between 2018-2020, represented Ghana in the Under-20 ECOWAS Games in Abidjan and the World High School Competition in Morocco all in 2018. He won the country gold in the Under-20 All African Games in Abidjan in 2019.

Athletics Coach William Awunime Akuka

The Coach of Athletics in charge of middle to long distance events at the Sports Directorate and an alumnus of the University, Mr. William Awunime Akuka was happy his athletes have been given the opportunity to experience this event at the African University level. Mr. Akuka who represented Ghana at the 2014 World Universities Cross Country in Uganda placing 24th believes this is the perfect opportunity to improve their times and unlock other opportunities in the future.

Contingent

The University of Ghana contingent is made up of two student athletes, the Athletics Coach and the Senior Assistant Registrar as the leader of delegation.

The team departs Accra for Nairobi on Wednesday, 17th November, 2021.
