UG Wins Twelve Medals At National Athletics Championship

UG's Grace Obuor won gold in 400 metres

The University of Ghana Athletics Team (Track and Field) won a total of twelve medals in nine events during the Ghana Athletics Association Open Championship held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi.

The twelve medals were made up of three (3) gold, three (3) silver and six (6) bronze.

Team UG Performance

The athletes who have been training since the reopening of school showed a lot of promise in the Championship winning three gold medals in 100m men, 400m women and 1500m men. Their performance further earned them three silver medals in 800m men, High Jump men and Javelin women. The bronze medals came in 100m men, 800m men, 5000m men, Triple Jump men, Javelin men and Long Jump men. 

Evans Cadman Yamoah equaled his personal best in High Jump

Evans Cadman Yamoah equaled his personal best of 2.05 metres in High Jump as well as Emmanuel Desu also equaling his personal best of 14.55 metres in Triple Jump.

Mr. Emmanuel Bruce-Okine, Head of Athletics, Sports Directorate

The Head of Athletics at the Sports Directorate, Mr. Emmanuel Bruce-Okine described the performance of his Team as hot and cold. Mr. Bruce-Okine mentioned that the coaches expected more from the athletes in improving their times and setting new personal bests. He added that the Championship has given his young Team the needed exposure and as coaches the opportunity to see the flaws in technique and skill which will be worked on at training.

Selection of Athletes for FISU Games

The Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) used the Championship to select athletes to represent Ghana at the World University Games to be held at Chengdu, China scheduled for 26th June to 7th July, 2022.
