The University of Ghana Sports Directorate is organising a one day invitational Basketball tournament on Saturday, February 23, 2019 on the Basketball Courts of University of Ghana (UG).
The tournament is to afford both the male and female basketball teams of UG the platform to improve their tactical, physical and team performance in competitive games as UG prepares to host the Ghana Universities Sports Association Games in 2020.
Participating Teams and Format
The six (6) teams invited to participate in the tournament include Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, University of Professional Studies, Accra, Ghana Technology University College, DUNK Ghana, Accra Technical University and Old Students Ladies Basketball Team of UG.
The tournament is a round robin for both male and female categories. The team with the maximum number of points wins the tournament.
Basketball Coach Excited about Tourney
The Basketball Coach of UG, Mr. Eric Ankamah Agyepong remarked how important the tournament is, adding that both UG male and female teams need such competitions to help them prepare thoroughly for the GUSA 2020 Games to be hosted by UG.
“We have to build a formidable team to compete at GUSA 2020. The aim is to win gold medals in both male and female categories.  To this end, the team has to be tactically disciplined, physically fit. Team cohesion should be excellent and psychologically prepared for the competition.”
He added that the UG basketball male team has enjoyed such total dominance in Ghana and on the African continent since 2016 (winning all six major trophies at stake).  This momentum needs to be sustained to serve as an inspiration for the female team to replicate.
UG male basketball team will also use the tournament apart from the Inter-Hall Basketball League to build momentum as they defend the University, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) competition scheduled for March to April 2019.
