UG Draws Curtain on 8th Ghana Universities Debate Championship

The University of Ghana has drawn the curtains on the 8th Ghana Universities Debate Championship after an eventful seven days of exhilarating debate among students from nine tertiary institutions across the country. The 8th edition, dubbed Wɔgbɛ jɛkɛ 2022 saw Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology crowned champions of the Open Debate, while the University of Ghana claimed the Public Speaking Trophy.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) Co-Chairperson, Director of Sports and Patron for the Ghana Universities Debate Association (GUDA), Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, speaking at the closing ceremony, expressed his profound gratitude to University Management, participating institutions, LOC Members, Staff of the Sports Directorate and the UG Community for the show of support and solidarity throughout the Championship. He emphasised the need to translate the talk into action in the community, schools and wherever they may find themselves, as they are agents of change. Dr. Bitugu swore the newly elected council members, led by Council Chairman, Elisha Owusu Akyaw of the University of Ghana into office.

KNUST usurped UG to reclaim the Open Debate trophy, making it 5 titles out of 8 championship finals. The University for Development Studies impressively placed 2nd in this category. This was the furthest they have reached in the championship since its inception.

In the public speaking category, UG showed supremacy once again, winning for the fourth time in eight championship finals. The University of Cape Coast was adjudged the winner in the novice category. They defended the trophy won at the 7th edition, hosted by the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani. Click here to see the winners.

The Provost of the College of Education, Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, delivering the closing note on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, remarked that he was certain participants had had a taste of the UG experience. He conveyed the appreciation of UG Senior Management to the heads of the participating institutions for the continuous support they give their respective debate teams, LOC, sponsors and the media for their patronage.

In attendance were Professor Rosina Kyeremateng, Dean of Student Affairs, UG; Mr. Martin Owusu Amoamah, Dean of Student Affairs, Accra Technical University; Mr. Shaibu Tanko, Director of Sports, University for Development Studies; Mr. Nicholas Kinsley Graham, Manager, UG Printing Press; and some Members of the LOC and UG Community.
