About

​​Professor Paul Banahene Adjei is a Full Professor with the School of Social Work, Memorial University, Canada and Carnegie/Banga Diasporan Visiting Scholar with the Department of Social Work, University of Ghana. He has previously served as the Associate Vice President (Indigenous Research) at Memorial University, Canada as well as Interim Dean for the School of Social Work, Memorial University, Canada. Dr. Adjei has successfully secured funds for various research projects relevant to advancing race issues and Indigenization in North America and the global south. His research areas fit well into the critical trends in social work education and contribute to knowledge that fills some of the gaps in the literature about Black, racialized and Indigenous people healthcare needs. In the last five years (2021-2026), he has, and in collaboration with other scholars, been successful in securing grants from seven different funding sources, five of such funding came from Tri-Council agencies—Social Science and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Grant (SSHRC-IDG), SSHRC Insight Grant, SSHRC Institutional Connection Grant, SSHRC Connection Grant, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). These funds have helped advance Dr. Adjei’s research on equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, anti-Black racism, social justice, and Indigenization. Consequently, he has become one of the scholars whose knowledge, expertise, and research have been sought by academic institutions, federal and provincial governments, and corporate organizations in Canada and internationally to respond to race relations and Indigenization. In his academic career, he has published over 40 refereed essays, Two refereed books, and another two book manuscripts in print now. He has also read over 100 refereed papers at International and national conferences, including keynoting at international conferences hosted by Howard University, US, University of South Africa, South Africa, University of Ghana, Ghana, as well as University of Toronto, Algoma University, Trent University, and Mount Royal University, Canada. ​​In 2022, Professor Adjei was awarded as the Most Inspiring Immigrant in Atlantic Canada by My East Coast Experience and RBC Bank, Canada.
