An Ethics Committee for the Basic and Applied Sciences has been inaugurated at the University of Ghana by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey.
In brief remarks at the Ceremony, Prof. Aryeetey expressed his gratitude to the members for accepting the challenge to be part of the committee. He described the constitution of the Committee as timely, especially as the University is discussing ways of being a lot more relevant in the field of research. He noted that ethical committees compel researchers to be creative and think extensively about the people and things they are researching on.

Prof. Aryeetey added that if research is ethically conducted the likelihood of attracting research grants will increase. He also expressed delight at the fact that the members were from diverse backgrounds and pledged his support for the work of the Committee.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of the Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID), Prof. John Gyapong, said, since the establishment of ORID, there have been many activities and processes to ensure that the university’s research environment is well managed as pertains in world class universities. He noted that the establishment of ethics committees is one such activity. Prof Gyapong said members of the Ethics Committee were chosen in consultation with the various Deans and Heads of Departments. He hinted that any research done within the College of Basic and Applied Sciences will be reviewed by this committee.
The Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu said the critical role that an ethics committee plays in a university repositioning itself to become a world class university is to ensure the adherence to all national and international standards, rules and regulations. He added that this key role has already been played by other committees and this has attracted large research grants from well-known and established international institutions.
Prof. Owusu urged members of the ethics committee to exhibit attributes such as credibility and pledged the support of the College.
