A Legacy of Leadership and Service: UG School of Pharmacy Celebrates Immediate Past Dean and Retired School Driver

A sense of deep gratitude filled the UG School of Pharmacy on Thursday, August 7, 2025, as faculty, staff, and student representatives gathered to celebrate the remarkable careers of two individuals who have left an indelible mark on the institution: immediate past Dean, Professor Isaac Julius Asiedu-Gyekye, and dedicated driver, Mr. Emmanuel Amartey.

A Visionary Dean's Enduring Impact

For nine (9) transformative years, Professor Isaac Julius Asiedu-Gyekye served as the visionary leader of the SOP, guiding the School's ascent from a place of academic excellence to a beacon of preeminence across Ghana and beyond. His tenure as Ag. Dean and Dean spanning 2016 to 2025, was defined by dynamic growth, innovative thinking, and an unwavering commitment to servant leadership. Under Professor Asiedu-Gyekye's leadership, the School saw significant advancements in all departments.

Various speakers hailed Professor Asiedu-Gyekye's leadership as one marked by significant advancements in curriculum development, infrastructure, and resource mobilisation, asserting that his tireless efforts have laid a strong foundation for future generations of pharmacy students and practitioners. Beyond his administrative achievements, Professor Asiedu-Gyekye's dual calling as an educator and Rev. Minister inspired countless lives, demonstrating that true leadership stems from a heart dedicated to service and the betterment of humanity.

Among the many notable achievements of Prof. Asiedu-Gyekye are the 2025 Prof. A. N. Tackie Excellence in Pharma Education Award, a national recognition of the School’s commitment to quality training and leadership in pharmacy education, as well as the outstanding accomplishment of Pharm. Dr. Maame Adjoa Gyasiwaa Aidoo, a member of the School’s first cohort of Doctor of Pharmacy graduates, who emerged as the overall best candidate in the 2024 Ghana Pharmacy Professional Qualifying Examinations

The Silent Pillar of Support

Serving as a driver since May 2013, Mr. Amartey distinguished himself with unwavering dedication, impeccable punctuality, and professionalism. His duties extended far beyond simply driving. Mr. Amartey was a guardian of every journey, ensuring the safe and timely transportation of staff, students, and guests. His meticulous attention to detail, from his intimate knowledge of routes to his commitment to vehicle maintenance, significantly enhanced the School's operational efficiency and reliability. Mr. Amartey's service, marked by a spotless accident-free record, exemplified the core values and ethos of the University of Ghana.

As the SOP bids a fond farewell to Mr. Amartey, the entire community wishes him good health, fulfilment, and continuous success in all his future endeavours. His legacy of dedication and excellence will undoubtedly continue to guide the School's path forward.

Recognition and awards

During the ceremony, the Dean, Professor Irene Kretchy presented well-deserved citations and gifts to Professor Asiedu-Gyekye and Mr. Amartey on behalf of the School in recognition of their vital contributions to the rich tapestry of the School.

The event also recognised the continued support of esteemed professors on post-retirement contracts, namely Prof. Henry Nettey, Prof. Alexander K. Nyarko, Prof. Ben Adu Gyan, and Prof. Mahama Duweijua, reminding all that the spirit of service and commitment continues to thrive.

Dr. Owusu Donkor Paul, a faculty member, and Michelle Naa Kowa Tetteh, a student of UGSOP moderated the event.
