Professor Andrew Anthony Adjei is the Director of Research, Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID). He is also a Professor of Immunology at the University of Ghana School of Medicine and Dentistry (UGSMD); Department of Pathology) and the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences (SBAHS), University of Ghana College of Health Sciences, Legon; a former Deputy Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the same University, and a past President of the Ghana Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists. He is a Fellow of the African Sciences Institute and also a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He trained at the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana at the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department and undertook his postgraduate training in Clinical Immunology in Ryukyus University Medical School, Okinawa, Japan and School of Health Sciences Tucson Medical Center, Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A.
Professor Adjei work since the early 90s has focused mainly on specific nutrients (nucleosides, nucleotides, arginine and glutamine) on the immune response, and mucosal immune responses to Cryptosporidium parvum infection. His academic and research interests include the promotion of research activities in Clinical and Biomedical Sciences at the national and international levels; immunopathogenesis of cerebral malaria, molecular epidemiology and phenotypic characterization of HIV in Ghana and implications for antiretroviral therapy, HPV genotypes associated with cervical cancer in Ghanaian women and molecular epidemiology and phenotypic characterization of prostate and breast cancers.
Resaerch Interests and Activities
He has interest in transfusion-transmitted viral, bacterial and parasite infections in blood transfusion centres in the country and has also been a strong advocate for researching into transfusion-transmitted infections in incarcerated individuals and Prison Officials; molecular characterization of hepatitis viruses, particularly HEV and also on clinical and cutaneous implications of skin bleaching products for cosmetic purposes among men and women in Ghana.
Professor Adjei has been involved in several national and international activities in the Biomedical Sciences (Immunology and Immunopathology) sector and served on expert panels and working groups related to Biomedical Sciences. He has worked closely with the National Accreditation Board, Ministry of Education, Ghana in the accreditation of Institutions including Programmes and Courses in Biomedical Sciences.
He is involved in improving the quality of Research through Training and scientific writing in UGSMD and SBAHS
Professor Adjei has considerable knowledge and skill in research and scientific writing and has organised and taught local courses on research and scientific writing. He serves as a Reviewer on several Journals and has 104 publications in peer reviewed journals. He is married and has three (3) children.
