UNIVERSITY OF GHANA, School of Public Health

THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast. The University of Ghana was set up by an Act of Parliament on October 1, 1961 (Act 79). With a current student population of about 29754 the University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of the public Universities in Ghana. The School of Public Health (SPH), University of Ghana, Legon was established in response to a growing demand for a cadre of Public Health Practitioners who will provide leadership in Public Health reforms in Ghana, primarily to train Public Health Practitioners. At SPH we believe that properly trained Public Health personnel will offer technical leadership in critical disciplines such as Population, Family, and Reproductive Health, Health Informatics and e-Health, Environmental hazards and related-diseases, Occupational Health, Social & Behavioural Sciences, Training Research and Planning and in the implementation of specific disease control programmes such as Malaria, AIDS, non-communicable diseases and neglected tropical diseases.

 

MAKERERE UNIVERSITY, College of Health Sciences

The College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) is one of the colleges of Makerere University whose mission is to improve the health of the people of Uganda through innovative teaching, research and provision of services responsive to societal needs. The college comprises four schools namely; School of Health Sciences, School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health and School of Medicine.

 

UGANDA MARTYRS UNIVERSITY, Faculty of Health Sciences

Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Uganda Martyrs turned into a Faculty on 29th January 2005. Its mission is "To form health managers with integrity, knowledge, managerial skills, attitudes and competencies needed to provide good quality health services to the Ugandan population."

UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI, College of Health Sciences

The University of Nairobi, a body corporate established by an Act of Parliament Cap 210 of the Laws of Kenya is the pioneer institution of University education in Kenya and the region. The only institution of higher learning in Kenya for a long time, the University of Nairobi responded to the national, regional and Africa's high level manpower training needs by developing and evolving strong, diversified academic programmes and specializations in basic sciences, applied sciences, technology, humanities, social sciences and the arts. The university is proud of its distinguished record of achievements in teaching, research, development and consultancy while strategizing for a greater future as the centre of academic, research and professional excellence.

 

MOI UNIVERSITY, School of Medicine (MUSOM)

MUSOM was established in 1988 as the Faculty of Health Sciences; however the first group of students was admitted in 1990 and graduated in 1997.  The philosophy of the school entails training health professionals in the context of the community in which they will later practice. The school emphasizes not only curative, hospital-based medicine, but also prevention of disease and promotion of good health through its community oriented approach. Our vision is to excel internationally in education of health professionals, health services and research.  We have a good track record of research and extension services.  Our Core Values include; professionalism and teamwork, innovative health professional education, integrity in health research and dissemination of knowledge and openness, broad based consultation and consensus building in decision making.

 

EDUARDO MONDLANE UNIVERSITY

The university was created in 1962 by the Portuguese Colonial Government with the name of Estudos Gerais Universitários de Moçambique-EGUM (General University Studies of Mozambique). Later, this name was shifted to University of Lourenço Marques (ULM) until 1976, when the institution was renamed the Eduardo Mondlane University, in homage to Dr. Eduardo Mondlane, founder of Frelimo (still the ruling party). At the inception it had only 7 courses, and it has continuously increased the number of courses, reaching a total of 46 in 2005. At large the University offers degrees of Bachelors/Licenciatura, Masters and PhDs. In the year 2007 it had 1,165 lecturers (65% full time:16%PhD, 25% masters) and 16,286 students.

 

The Faculty of Medicine was established at the onset of the University. The major action lines have been training medical doctors and public health experts as well as conducting research in various domains of clinical and biomedical, operational, public health, epidemiological, social sciences, behavioural, health policy and systems.

 

Under the partnership, Eduardo Mondlane University would be identifying qualified students and staff and sending them to partner institutions for Master or PhD programmes. It will also host academic staff posted from partner institutions to teach in its academic programs.

 

UNIVERSITE DU BURUNDI, Faculte De Medecine De Bujumbura

The University of Burundi established in 1964, has 11,000 students in 13 faculties and institutes. Since the 2011-2012 academic year, the University of Burundi is doing reforms in education by adopting the BMD system. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Burundi began with the reform. Our goal is to strengthen the technical and scientific capacity of human resources by raising the level of teachers  by providing training in Masters  and PhD in Public Health because we project to open the public health sector in the Faculty.  The university would send Master and PhD students to partner institutions to study. It will also host academic staff posted from partner institutions to teach in its academic programs.

 

UNIVERSITY OF JUBA

University of Juba (UJ), South Sudan’s largest and oldest university, was established as an independent institution of higher learning in the then Sudan in 1975. It is a collegiate university that originally had 5 constituent colleges but later expanded to 12 colleges and 4 centers during its 22 years of displacement in Khartoum. UJ offers day and Distance Education programs covering 7 thematic areas to a student population of about 10200 undergraduates and 100 postgraduates and acts as a centre for research in South Sudan. University of Juba has seven thematic clusters that define the program space within which it undertakes its academic activities which are organized into colleges, schools, centers and departments.

 

The primary goal for the establishment of the University of Juba was to train human resource for the development needs of South Sudan and other marginalized regions in the former Sudan. The University of Juba is engaged in this partnership to get assistance from the well established partners to train medical staff for South Sudan. It will also host academic staff posted from partner institutions to teach in its academic programs.

 

UNIVERSITE CATHOLIQUE DE BUKAVU (UCB)

UCB is a private Higher Education Institution registered in 1991 to respond to the rampant food insecurity and malnutrition in eastern D.R. Congo. The Institution has about 1500 students from South-Kivu and other parts of the country and the region for undergraduate programme in five faculties including agriculture. The university will send Master and PhD students to partner institutions.

 

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LESOTHO (NUL)

NUL’s vision is to be a leading African university responsive to national needs; committed to high quality teaching, life-long learning, research and community service, respected nationally and internationally.  NUL’s mission is to promote national advancement through innovative teaching, learning, research and professional services, producing high calibre and responsible graduates able to serve their communities with diligence. The University is engaged in this partnership to get assistance from the well established partners. It will also host academic staff posted from partner institutions to teach in its academic programs.

Ghana Medical Association

The first organized group of African doctors in Ghana jointly founded by three Ghanaian doctors was the Gold Coast Medical Practitioners Union which was formed in 1933 to act as a vehicle for redressing grievances of African medical officers in government employment. It was jointly founded by three Ghanaian doctors. Subsequently in January 1953, the Ghana Branch of the British Medical Association was inaugurated following the formation of an African government in 1951. Five years later, on January 4, 1958, the Gold Coast Medical Practitioners Union and the Ghana Branch of the British Medical Association officially ceased to exist having been amalgamated to form the Ghana Medical Association. With an initial membership of forty, the GMA was inaugurated. With a current membership of over 1700, the GMA is made up of ten Divisions whose Chairmen together with the National Executive Committee and a representative each from the Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners, Ghana Dental Association and the Junior Doctors Society, constitute the National Executive Council. The GMA is a member of the Confederation of African Medical Associations and Societies (CAMAS), Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA) and the World Medical Association).

 

The Ghana Medical Association, as an associate partner will provide opportunities for internship engagements for graduate students and also allow members to participate in training programmes to share their respective field and practical experiences.

 

UGANDA NATIONAL HEALTH  RESEARCH ORGANISATION

The Uganda National Research Organisation (UNHRO) was established by the Act of 2009. It is a Public Research Organisation whose role is to create a sustainable culture of health research by providing policy and ethical guidelines and national coordination and regulations of health research. It provides policy and ethical guidelines to parties involved in health research and help dialogue between policy makers, communities and researchers in different disciplines to ensure that research relevant to the needs of the people and are consistent with health policies and that research findings are utilised by the relevant stake holders. UNHRO also approves, registers and supervises health related research in all institutions involved.  It undertakes any other health related research activities that are likely to assist in the implementation of the objectives of the organisation. Besides, UNHRO helps strengthen research capacity in institutions involved in research by building a quality human resource which is capable of responding to essential research demands of Uganda.

 

PAN AFRICAN UNIVERSITY, INSTITUTE OF BASIC SCIENCE AND INNOVATION

The Pan African University is the cornerstone of efforts of the African union to revitalise higher education and research in Africa. The African Union Pan African University represents an explicit acknowledge by the political leadership of Africa of the indispensable place of a revitalised and re-oriented system of higher education and research in Africa’s 21st century development agenda. The Pan African University is envisioned to be a third generation university geared to produce African-centred knowledge with global appeal and reach, which, together with carefully selected knowledge developed by across the globe, should form the basis of education at all levels and in all fields in Africa.

 

The Pan African University Institute of Basic Sciences Technology and Innovation is set to produce Leaders in the areas of Mathematics, Molecular biology and Biotechnology; Civil Engineering & construction management and Electrical & electronics Engineering. The graduates from these programs are expected to come up with excellent scientific knowledge that could be harnessed to provide innovative solutions for the myriad problems that abound in the African Continent.

 

The PAUSTI for the last two years has been dealing with student’s mobility across Africa. Currently PAUSTI host 54 students at Msc level drawn from 13 African countries. PAUSTI therefore will bring such experience on student handling from selection, logistic and accommodation. PAUSTI will be happy to participate in this project since current stream of student are sponsored by international donors including the EU. The Implementation of the project in a result based system. PAUSTI will help in promotion and visibility of the project through her Africa networks; will assist in orientation accommodation and other student relating issues in host institute. PAUSTI will be happy to advise in student selection criteria, drafting of student agreements and facilitating logistic issues such as Visas.
