The Dental Unit of the University Health Services, on September 10, 2021, received a donation of a wide array of dental supplies with an estimated market value of approximately GH¢270,000 from The Yonkofa Project. The purpose of the donation was to support the Dental Unit in the delivery of its services.

Prof. George Armah of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research

At a brief presentation ceremony, Prof. George Armah of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, and a partner to the The Yonkofa Foundation who led the team, indicated that the donation was part of the Project’s efforts to assist the University Hospital in serving the University community, and by extension, the people of Ghana.

Presenting the items, Dr. Gabriella Nanci, President of The Yonkofa Project, was elated to note that the earlier donations were beneficial. She further requested specific needs of the Unit to guide the Project in its future donations.

Dr. Mark Edward Frempong, Director, University Health Services

Receiving the items, Dr. Mark Edward Frempong, expressed profound gratitude to The Yonkofa Project. He indicated that although the Dental Unit had limited resources, the number of patients visiting the Unit had generally increased. However, with the committed personnel at post, he was optimistic that the donation would serve as a motivation to work even harder.  Dr. Frempong solicited for more support and collaboration from The Yonkofa Project, its partners as well as benevolent individuals and organisations.

In brief remarks, Dr. Joseph Kwasi Nimako-Boateng, Head of the Dental Unit, was delighted to report that the donations received over the past year had made tremendous impact in not only improving patient care and service delivery, but also aided in the practical training of dental surgeons. He disclosed that plans were far advanced to enable his team embark on an outreach programme at Eikwe in the Western Region to compliment The Yonkofa Project’s effort there.

Present at the ceremony were doctors, nurses and medical trainees at the Dental Unit as well as the The Yonkofa Project team comprising Prof. John Blackwell, Dr. Tiffany Herbert and Mr. Kent Herbert.

The Yonkofa Project builds medical facilities in the most remote areas of Western Ghana and supports them by training medical staff and supplying the needed medicines. The Project has been an ardent benefactor of the UG Dental Unit since the year 2020, through the donation of a variety of dental materials.
