Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu awarded Japanese "Order of the Rising Sun"

At a well-attended ceremony on Wednesday 29th November 2017, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Kaoru Yoshimura, presented the Emperor's award of the Order of the Rising Sun on behalf of Emperor Meiji of Japan to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, in recognition of Professor Owusu’s distinguished achievements.

Present at the ceremony, held at the residence of the Ambassador in Accra, were the Vice-President of Ghana, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Works and Housing, the Minister of Education, representatives of University of Ghana senior management, and several government dignitaries and members of the diplomatic corps.

Professor E. Oduro Owusu received the award with enthusiasm and gratitude and thanked the government and people of Japan for the honour. He dedicated the award to all children of Ghana who live without hope, and encouraged them to study hard to become the rising sun.

The Order of the Rising Sun is historically the first national decoration award created by the Japanese government on 10th April 1875, and decreed by Emperor Meiji of Japan.  The award of the Order is administered by the Decoration Bureau of Office of the Prime Minister and awarded in the name of the Emperor. The design of the medallion features rays of sunlight from the rising sun, which symbolize the energy and power of the rising rays of the sun.

The evening also marked the Birthday of the Emperor of Japan and the 60th Independent Anniversary of Ghana.

Congratulations to Prof. Oduro Owusu for making the University proud
